On 29th January, the Scottish giants Rangers FC officials in India announced signing Ngangom Bala Devi at Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru facilitated by Bengaluru FC.
The 29-year-old who hails from Irengbam, a small village near Imphal, created history by becoming the first Asian International to join Rangers Women FC. This also makes her the first Indian Women Professional Player playing the top division in Europe.
Bala Devi is a forward in the Indian Women’s National Football Team. After signing this deal, she became the first Indian woman footballer to sign a professional contract for any European club.
Bala Devi, who’s currently India’s top goal scorer, was over the moon with her move to Scotland. She said, “I’m excited to get this 18-month contract and to play in the No. 10 jersey. For the Indian team too I played in the No. 10 jersey. That makes it double sweet. Now I want to do well over there and motivate youngsters in our country. I want to tell them that they can also dream big and play for top clubs.”
According to Rangers FC legend Mark Hateley, “Bala will be a key player for us. We don’t give that shirt that easily! She impressed us all.”
Indian women’s team coach Maymol said, “It’s great for Bala that she got a contract with a big club like Rangers. She has achieved so much in India already. Now, it’s time for her to take a further step and do well in Europe.“
Bala has been a part of the senior national team since 2005 and was teammates with ex-India skipper Bembem Devi, who recently became the first Indian Woman Footballer to be honored with the Padma Shri — India’s Fourth-Highest Civilian Honor.
Our Indian Men’s Football Team skipper, Sunil Chhetri tweeted “You’re going where no Indian Woman Footballer has gone, and you will be carrying the dreams of us all. Good luck, Bala. Do us proud.“
We from EWNS News wish her Best of Luck for the future at Rangers FC. You will be in the prayers and good wishes of a Billion Hearts. We do not want to be a Sleeping Football Gaint any more. We want to be awake and kicking. And this moment can be the beginning of that Awakening process. Bala, you will go forever into the Indian Football History. This will be a defining moment of Indian Women Football.
