The American giant IBM Board of directors have decided to appoint Arvind Krishna as CEO, which makes him the latest Indian who will hold that rank at a global technology giant.

Krishna, 57, son of an Indian Army officer, joined IBM in 1990 and is currently its senior vice president for cloud and cognitive software, two of the company’s biggest focus areas. He led the company’s $34-billion acquisition of open source enterprise software company Red Hat in 2018, a deal that was the biggest in IBM’s history.

An alumni of IIT-Kanpur Arvind Krishna will lead the 108-year-old IBM, the American company which posted annual revenue of $80 billion in 2018.

IBM said current CEO Ginni Rometty would continue as executive chairman of the board through the end of 2020.

“Arvind is the right CEO for the next era at IBM. He is a brilliant technologist who has played a significant role in developing our key technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud, quantum, computing and Blockchain. He is also a superb operational leader,” CEO Rometty said in a statement.
